Confession: I love Wonder Woman.
I kind of want to BE her.
It’s not the golden lasso of truth, or even her hand to hand combat skills (she can fly too, right?!).
It’s how she presents herself.
While putting on a costume doesn’t quite make a person Wonder Woman (trust me, I’ve tried-)…
it has much more to do with how she ‘shows up’:
It’s her posture, her intentions, and most importantly, her way of BE-ing in the world.
Turns out, BEING like Wonder Woman may make you more of a real-life superhero than you might think.
It’s called the BE-DO-HAVE paradigm, and it’s actually the fastest, most fulfilling way to bring your dreams into reality.
The concept goes like this:
1st step: BE.
Let’s say you want a promotion at work. Who would you need to be/how would you feel if you already had it? Confident, happy, motivated, driven? These are the behaviors and feelings to adopt FIRST.
2nd step: DO.
What would you DO if you had your promotion already? How would you behave? What would you wear? How would you present yourself?
3rd step: HAVE.
By changing your way of BEING, and behaving as if you already have the thing you want, you can experience the ‘having’.
This may sound confusing, and for many people it’s incredibly counter-intuitive. We live in a society where we’ve been told we need to DO DO DO. Work hard, hustle, and if you put in enough effort and you’re lucky, then you’ll be able to get the things you want and finally ‘be’ happy, content, and inspired.
But when you lead with ‘being’ – how you show up in the world, which is the only part we have control over anyway, your brain shifts in to a place of power.
Author and business coach Mike Robbins says it beautifully:
“Remembering that who and how we’re “being” in life creates the context for how we think, feel, and act (some of the key raw materials for how we ultimately create our reality), gives us access to what we’re really after.”
After all, we are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.
When I was dreaming about starting my own business I wondered how I was going to help women empower themselves- and how I was going to make it on my own when I’d never done it before…
Then I thought of my alter-ego: Wonder Woman. I remembered I get to choose who and how I’m BEING in the world and began to show up differently.
I greet my days with happiness, positivity, and unwavering belief in the beauty I see in human-kind.
I hold my head high, make eye contact, speak my truth, and do what I can to lift up those around me- so they can see their own power (because we all sometimes forget who and what we are).
And here I am. Thriving in my own business. I don’t walk around in my Wonder Woman costume (most days), but deciding to be a little more like her has helped me be a little more like myself.
After all, the things we most admire and recognize in others are often the things we too possess. Even though Wonder Woman is a fictional character, the values she stands for are very real. Superheroes are representational of an idea, a collective conscious that we can choose to create.
And so I choose to BE the Wonder Woman of my life.
Who and how are you BEING in yours?
